Shock formation and the ideal shape of ramp compression waves
We derive expressions for shock formation based on the local curvature of the
flow characteristics during dynamic compression. Given a specific ramp adiabat,
calculated for instance from the equation of state for a substance, the ideal
nonlinear shape for an applied ramp loading history can be determined. We
discuss the region affected by lateral release, which can be presented in
compact form for the ideal loading history. Example calculations are given for
representative metals and plastic ablators. Continuum dynamics (hydrocode)
simulations were in good agreement with the algebraic forms. Example
applications are presented for several classes of laser-loading experiment,
identifying conditions where shocks are desired but not formed, and where long
duration ramps are desired

Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA)
The Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA) is a staged experiment to
measure 21 cm emission from the primordial intergalactic medium (IGM)
throughout cosmic reionization (), and to explore earlier epochs of our
Cosmic Dawn (). During these epochs, early stars and black holes
heated and ionized the IGM, introducing fluctuations in 21 cm emission. HERA is
designed to characterize the evolution of the 21 cm power spectrum to constrain
the timing and morphology of reionization, the properties of the first
galaxies, the evolution of large-scale structure, and the early sources of
heating. The full HERA instrument will be a 350-element interferometer in South
Africa consisting of 14-m parabolic dishes observing from 50 to 250 MHz.
Currently, 19 dishes have been deployed on site and the next 18 are under
construction. HERA has been designated as an SKA Precursor instrument.
In this paper, we summarize HERA's scientific context and provide forecasts
for its key science results. After reviewing the current state of the art in
foreground mitigation, we use the delay-spectrum technique to motivate
high-level performance requirements for the HERA instrument. Next, we present
the HERA instrument design, along with the subsystem specifications that ensure
that HERA meets its performance requirements. Finally, we summarize the
schedule and status of the project. We conclude by suggesting that, given the
realities of foreground contamination, current-generation 21 cm instruments are
approaching their sensitivity limits. HERA is designed to bring both the
sensitivity and the precision to deliver its primary science on the basis of
proven foreground filtering techniques, while developing new subtraction
techniques to unlock new capabilities. The result will be a major step toward
realizing the widely recognized scientific potential of 21 cm cosmology.Comment: 26 pages, 24 figures, 2 table

Canary Islands (NE Atlantic) as a biodiversity "hotspot" of Gambierdiscus: Implications for future trends of ciguatera in the area
In the present study the geographical distribution, abundance and composition of Gambierdiscus was described over a 600 km longitudinal scale in the Canary Islands. Samples for cell counts, isolation and identification of Gambierdiscus were obtained from five islands (El Hierro, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote). Average densities of Gambierdiscus spp. between 0 and 2200 cells g−1 blot dry weight of macrophyte were recorded. Morphological (light microscopy and SEM techniques) and molecular analyses (LSU and SSU rDNA sequencing of cultures and single cells from the field) of Gambierdiscus was performed. Five Gambierdiscus species (G. australes, G. caribaeus, G. carolinianus, G. excentricus and G. silvae), together with a new putative species (Gambierdiscus ribotype 3) were identified. These results suggest that some cases of CFP in the region could be associated with the accumulation of ciguatoxins in the marine food web acquired from local populations of Gambierdiscus. This unexpected high diversity of Gambierdiscus species in an area which a priori is not under risk of ciguatera, hints at an ancient settlement of Gambierdiscus populations, likely favored by warmer climate conditions in the Miocene Epoch (when oldest current Canary Islands were created), in contrast with cooler present ones. Currently, warming trends associated with climate change could contribute to extend favorable environmental conditions in the area for Gambierdiscus growth especially during winter months.Postprin
The Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey. III. A constraint on dust grain lifetime in early-type galaxies
Passive early-type galaxies (ETGs) provide an ideal laboratory for studying the interplay between dust formation around evolved stars and its subsequent destruction in a hot gas. Using Spitzer-IRS and Herschel data we compare the dust production rate in the envelopes of evolved AGB stars with a constraint on the total dust mass. Early-type galaxies which appear to be truly passively evolving are not detected by Herschel. We thus derive a distance independent upper limit to the dust grain survival time in the hostile environment of ETGs of <46 \ub1 25 Myr for amorphous silicate grains. This implies that ETGs which are detected at far-infrared wavelengths have acquired a cool dusty medium via interaction. Given likely time-scales for ram-pressure stripping, this also implies that only galaxies with dust in a cool (atomic) medium can release dust into the intra-cluster medium
Optimizing Sparse RFI Prediction using Deep Learning
Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) is an ever-present limiting factor among
radio telescopes even in the most remote observing locations. When looking to
retain the maximum amount of sensitivity and reduce contamination for Epoch of
Reionization studies, the identification and removal of RFI is especially
important. In addition to improved RFI identification, we must also take into
account computational efficiency of the RFI-Identification algorithm as radio
interferometer arrays such as the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array grow
larger in number of receivers. To address this, we present a Deep Fully
Convolutional Neural Network (DFCN) that is comprehensive in its use of
interferometric data, where both amplitude and phase information are used
jointly for identifying RFI. We train the network using simulated HERA
visibilities containing mock RFI, yielding a known "ground truth" dataset for
evaluating the accuracy of various RFI algorithms. Evaluation of the DFCN model
is performed on observations from the 67 dish build-out, HERA-67, and achieves
a data throughput of 1.6 HERA time-ordered 1024 channeled
visibilities per hour per GPU. We determine that relative to an amplitude only
network including visibility phase adds important adjacent time-frequency
context which increases discrimination between RFI and Non-RFI. The inclusion
of phase when predicting achieves a Recall of 0.81, Precision of 0.58, and
score of 0.75 as applied to our HERA-67 observations.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure
Effectiveness of joint mobilisation after cast immobilisation for ankle fracture: a protocol for a randomised controlled trial [ACTRN012605000143628]
BACKGROUND: Passive joint mobilisation is a technique frequently used by physiotherapists to reduce pain, improve joint movement and facilitate a return to activities after injury, but its use after ankle fracture is currently based on limited evidence. The primary aim of this trial is to determine if adding joint mobilisation to a standard exercise programme is effective and cost-effective after cast immobilisation for ankle fracture in adults. METHODS/DESIGN: Ninety participants will be recruited from the physiotherapy departments of three teaching hospitals and randomly allocated to treatment or control groups using a concealed procedure. All participants will perform an exercise programme. Participants in the treatment group will also receive joint mobilisation twice a week for four weeks. Blinded follow-up assessments will be conducted four, 12 and 24 weeks after randomisation. The primary outcome measures will be the Lower Extremity Functional Scale and the Assessment of Quality of Life. Secondary outcomes will include measures of impairments, activity limitation and participation. Data on the use of physiotherapy services and participants' out-of-pocket costs will be collected for the cost-effective and cost-utility analyses. To test the effects of treatment, between-group differences will be examined with analysis of covariance using a regression approach. The primary conclusions will be based on the four-week follow-up data. DISCUSSION: This trial incorporates features known to minimise bias. It uses a pragmatic design to reflect clinical practice and maximise generalisability. Results from this trial will contribute to an evidence-based approach for rehabilitation after ankle fracture
HI 21cm Cosmology and the Bi-spectrum: Closure Diagnostics in Massively Redundant Interferometric Arrays
New massively redundant low frequency arrays allow for a novel investigation
of closure relations in interferometry. We employ commissioning data from the
Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array to investigate closure quantities in this
densely packed grid array of 14m antennas operating at 100 MHz to 200 MHz. We
investigate techniques that utilize closure phase spectra for redundant triads
to estimate departures from redundancy for redundant baseline visibilities. We
find a median absolute deviation from redundancy in closure phase across the
observed frequency range of about 4.5deg. This value translates into a
non-redundancy per visibility phase of about 2.6deg, using prototype
electronics. The median absolute deviations from redundancy decrease with
longer baselines. We show that closure phase spectra can be used to identify
ill-behaved antennas in the array, independent of calibration. We investigate
the temporal behavior of closure spectra. The Allan variance increases after a
one minute stride time, due to passage of the sky through the primary beam of
the transit telescope. However, the closure spectra repeat to well within the
noise per measurement at corresponding local sidereal times (LST) from day to
day. In future papers in this series we will develop the technique of using
closure phase spectra in the search for the HI 21cm signal from cosmic
